Microcanonical entropy of the spherical model with nearest-neighbour interactions

چکیده
For the spherical model with nearest-neighbour interactions, the microcanonical entropy s(ε,m) is computed analytically in the thermodynamic limit for all accessible values of the energy ε and the magnetization m per spin. The entropy is found to be a concave function, implying that the microcanonical and the canonical ensemble are equivalent, despite the long-range nature of the spherical constraint the spins have to obey. Two transition lines are identified in the (ε,m)-plane, separating a paramagnetic phase from a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic one. The resulting microcanonical phase diagram is compared to the more familiar canonical one.

Degenerate Ising model for atomistic simulation of crystal-melt interfaces.
One of the simplest microscopic models for a thermally driven first-order phase transition is an Ising-type lattice system with nearest-neighbour interactions, an external field, and a degeneracy parameter. The underlying lattice and the interaction coupling constant control the anisotropic energy of the phase boundary, the field strength represents the bulk latent heat, and the degeneracy quan...
متن کاملKinetic energy and microcanonical nonanalyticities in finite and infinite systems
In contrast to the canonical case, microcanonical thermodynamic functions can show nonanalyticities also for finite systems. In this paper we contribute to the understanding of these nonanalyticities by working out the relation between nonanalyticities of the microcanonical entropy and its configurational counterpart. If the configurational microcanonical entropy ω N (v) has a nonanalyticity at...

متن کاملEFFECT OF THE NEXT-NEAREST NEIGHBOR INTERACTION ON THE ORDER-DISORDER PHASE TRANSITION
In this work, one and two-dimensional lattices are studied theoretically by a statistical mechanical approach. The nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions are both taken into account, and the approximate thermodynamic properties of the lattices are calculated. The results of our calculations show that: (1) even though the next-nearest neighbor interaction may have an insignificant ef...

We study the properties of a model system that exhibits a transition between ferromagnetic and helical order at a Lifshitz point, as interaction parameters R and S compete.neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour spin pairs respectively in the z direction, and J,, is a nearest-neighbour interaction between spin pairs in each xy plane. We calculate the high-temperature susceptibility series to order...
